Past Project: Deck Addition

Recently, we have had a great lineup of projects and even more important, great clients. This project is a perfect example of repeat work for a great customer with great taste demanding quality work!

This month's featured project is a deck addition that we just finished. We had built the home back in 2008 and then recently completed a deck addition this summer. The back of the home already had a deck but it was just a little small (16' wide x 12' deep) after the owners furniture was placed on it. They really wanted a space that they could use more often. They decided that they needed more space for the furniture they had and that it needed to be screened-in to keep bugs away. They also wanted a fireplace in the space and of course they didn't want it to look like an addition.

We came up with a plan to add eight feet onto the existing deck and then screen it in. We used the same composite decking and the same maintenance-free materials that were used on the home originally to keep the same look and feel.

During the first week of the addition, we pulled the existing hip roof truss system (the angled part on the left) and moved it out eight feet. We had to pour new footings and add beams to support the addition. Then we went to work filling in the gap in the roof and all of the trim to make it look like the rest of the roof. New gutters were put on and the existing downspouts were re-used. Hold your mouse over the picture to see the progress.

Missing part of the roof

After the roof was filled in, we went to work on the interior details. Below you can see the fireplace, the new decking and the new screening. If you hold your mouse over the picture, you can see the ceiling. We matched the existing ceiling by adding four can lights and another ceiling fan. After this picture was taken, the entire room was screened-in. The main goal with any addition is to make it look like it had always been that way.

Below is the end result. Our carpenters and doing their final paint touch-up. The owners have moved their furniture back and are enjoying their bug-free screened porch as they wanted.

Addition Finished

We work very hard to earn repeat business. It is a sign that the owner's enjoyed the building process and are happy with our dedicated crew of employees. As we mentioned above, this particular project was especially fun because of the client's great taste and demand for quality! That is our ideal customer!
